Launched in 1998, the 2nd generation Mazda MX-5 was mostly mechanically identical to the original MX-5, however improved engines, a 6-speed gearbox on certain models and additional chassis bracing, resulted in a more refined and responsive setup. The iconic pop-up headlights of the Mk1 were replaced with fixed units to meet the more stringent pedestrian safety requirements and the body was more rounded taking some styling cues from the FD3 RX-7 of the same era. 2001 saw the release of the Mk2.5 featuring a more updated front bumper, projector headlights, and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on the 1.8 models to help increase low down torque and improve emissions.
