Triumph can trace it’s origins back to 1897 as the Triumph Cycle Company, importing bicycles to Britain from Europe. In 1902 they began manufacturing motor cycles and eventually car engines for other automotive manufacturers. In 1930 The Triumph Motor company was born producing exclusive cars for the wealthy. The company experienced mixed fortunes and in 1944 was bought by Standard Motor Company, to form Standard Triumph. It was under this name that in 1953 the TR2 was produced, the first of a line of successful two-seat sports cars. The TR series would continue until 1981 surviving the takeover by Leyland Motors in 1960.

Le origini di Triumph risalgono al 1897 con il nome di Triumph Cycle Company, che importava biciclette in Gran Bretagna dall'Europa. Nel 1902 iniziarono a produrre motocicli e infine motori per automobili per altre case automobilistiche. Nel 1930 nacque la Triumph Motor Company, che produceva auto esclusive per i ricchi. L'azienda conobbe alterne fortune e nel 1944 fu acquistata dalla Standard Motor Company, per formare la Standard Triumph. Fu con questo nome che nel 1953 venne prodotta la TR2, la prima di una serie di vetture sportive a due posti di successo. La serie TR sarebbe continuata fino al 1981, sopravvivendo all'acquisizione da parte della Leyland Motors nel 1960.
