First launched at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989, the Mk1 Mazda MX-5 also known as the Miata in the USA or the Eunos Roadster in the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM), was an instant hit. Named after a condensed form of “Mazda Experiment, project number 5”. Taking both styling and mechanical cues from the Lotus Elan of the 1960’s, albeit far more modernised, featuring twin wishbone suspension front and rear and the classic formula of an engine in the front, gearbox in the middle, and drive to the rear wheels, the first generation MX-5 set the way for Mazda making the best-selling sports car in automotive history.
