Improved braking is a desirable modification early on in the tuning process; the options available depend on the degree of increased safety required. Standard brakes with good smooth discs and uprated linings are perfectly suitable for standard road cars, but if increased braking efficiency is required, for instance to match the needs in modern traffic conditions, then the progression to larger brakes is essential. Ventilated brakes are required if continued applications of the brakes are expected (for instance in hard driving on country roads or hilly, even mountainous areas), where the extra cooling will reduce brake fade.
